A chromatographic purity result compares the main peak against the other peaks a run resolved, and reports a percentage. The instrument separates the sample in time, integrates the area under each peak, and sets the main peak against the total area the run resolved. On this record the figure is reported against a release criterion, written as not less than 95.0 percent, and measured purity across the published catalog runs 98.6 to 99.6 percent.
The percentage is arithmetic performed on peaks. Nothing in that arithmetic knows what the peaks were made of, which is why identity is carried on separate lines and not read off the purity figure.
02 / Where it stops
A chromatographic purity result apportions area inside one separation of one batch, and it names none of the species it apportions.
Two consequences follow, and both are scopes rather than warnings. The figure belongs to one run on one batch, so it carries forward to no other batch. Anything the separation failed to resolve sits outside the number, because a peak that did not separate was never set against the total. A purity result high or low is still silent on which compound produced the main peak.
